The life of Catharina Ras, Steenberg’s remarkable founder, was one of adventure and zeal and can be imagined into a tale of FIVE chapters with each chapter offering Catharina a series of seemingly insurmountable challenges.

These FIVE chapters illustrate the FIVE LIVES of Catharina and how she was able to harness her courage, adapt and be resilient through each new challenge and each new life.

With Steenberg Five Lives Red Blend, we show admiration to Catharina’s life-long resilience and courage.

The FIVE chapters are narrated on a series of different back labels. Collect them all to discover the story.

Steenberg Five Lives expresses an intense dark red hue with a lighter, garnet red on the rim. The nose displays prominently with blackcurrant cassis and notes of earth, basil and plum. It is a medium to full-bodied wine, showing a silky texture and depth, as well as an elegant tannin structure. Savoury sundried tomato pesto, tobacco spice, cherry and cinnamon notes linger on the palate long after the last sip. The Merlot forms the backbone of this wine with clean, bright fruit which add subtle freshness. The Cabernet Sauvignon brings a formal, earnest profile to the blend. This wine is showing beautifully now and will reward cellaring for up to 5 years.

In The Cellar

The two varietal portions for Steenberg Five Lives were vinified in stainless steel tanks. Prior to fermentation, 10-15% of the juice was drawn off the skins to aid body and fullness. Both varietals were fermented separately, on the skins, for 14 days. Pump overs were done twice per day to extract colour and tannin. After fermentation they were separately racked into small French oak barrels Malolactic fermentation took place in barrel and the wine was aged for 20 months. The wine was then blended and a light fining was done before bottling.

  • STEENBERG CATHARINA RED BLEND 2018

    The 2018 Catharina is bold yet suave, forthright yet subtle, assured and alluring. It displays volumes of basil and cedar, cassis and lavender blossom, cinnamon stick and dark chocolate. Layers of concentrated red and black fruit (raspberry, blackcurrant and black cherry) show on both the nose and the palate, accented with a full, smooth texture from the Cabernet Sauvignon component. Light herbal notes from the Merlot lend a refreshing finish, while the Malbec and Petit Verdot round out the blend, adding structure and depth. Dark fruit and spice, lifting acidity and an encompassing tannic finish create the optimal pairing for most red meat (particularly a garlic and rosemary stuffed roast lamb shoulder) or rich saucy dishes. Will bottle age well for 7 to 10 years after bottling.

  • STEENBERG NEBBIOLO 2017

    Returning to this wine years after bottling has proven what a great vintage 2017 was for reds in Constantia. On appearance, this wine is ruby red with a typically clear yet bright hue. The bouquet displays primary notes of fresh strawberry coulis, dried cranberry along with some truffle, leather and red cherry. The wine displays the natural tart acidity and grippy tannins of Nebbiolo on the palate, although with a well-rounded and fuller mouth-feel than can sometimes be the case with this varietal. Flavours of sour cherry, raspberry and tobacco leaf linger to give the wine brilliant length and persistence.

    The wine shows beautiful fruit and floral characters in youth, but will develop well over the next 7 to 10 years and will greatly reward those who resist it’s youthful charm.
