STEENBERG MERLOT 2020

R210.00 VAT

Wine Club price R178.50 p/b

Our 2020 Merlot is a quintessential cool-climate expression of the cultivar: elegant with soft dark fruit and characteristic notes of plum, liquorice, and mulberry with a lively edge. The nose offers cedarwood and lavender, while the broody and deep palate reveals raspberry preserve, umami and spicy clove. The velvety texture is enhanced by a refreshing acidity, while well-integrated, fine tannins add structure and a dry finish luring you back to the glass. This medium to full-bodied wine will stand up to rich dishes with strong Mediterranean flavours, such as braised and roast meats, tomato-based stews, mature cheese, and briny olives. Will bottle age well for five to seven years after bottling.

In The Cellar

Intensive suckering and crop reduction helps concentrate the fruit and ensures that the Merlot has good colour and a distinctive character. The grapes were harvested at a sugar level of 24-25°B. 15% of the juice was drawn off before crush / de-stemming to improve flavour and colour. The juice was fermented on the skins for 10 – 14 days, allowing the temperature in the tank to peak at 28°C. After malolactic conversion, the wine was transferred to a combination of 3rd fill and older 225l French oak barrels to mature for an average of 24 months. It then underwent a light fining before bottling in July 2022.

  • STEENBERG CATHARINA RED BLEND 2020

    Wine Club price R310.25 p/b

The 2020 Catharina is bold yet suave, forthright yet subtle, assured and alluring. It displays intense and inviting aromas of blackberry and plum, cassis and lavender blossom, vanilla stick and dark chocolate. Layers of concentrated red and black fruit (raspberry, blackcurrant and black cherry) show on both the nose and the palate, accented with a full, supple texture from the Cabernet Sauvignon component. Light herbal notes from the Merlot lend a refreshing finish, while the Malbec rounds out the blend, adding structure and depth.
Dark fruit and spice, lifting acidity and an encompassing tannic finish create the optimal pairing for most red meat (particularly a garlic and rosemary stuffed roast lamb shoulder) or rich saucy dishes. Will bottle age well for 7 to 10 years after bottling.

  • STEENBERG NEBBIOLO 2018

    Wine Club price R242.25 p/b

The nose initially shows a savoury aroma reminiscent of heirloom tomato relish. This is followed by hues of aniseed and dried porcini mushrooms along with some sour cherry, rooibos tea leaf, rose petal and bran. The wine displays the natural tart acidity and grippy tannins of Nebbiolo on the palate, although with a well-rounded and lighter mouth-feel than can sometimes be the case with this varietal. The bright, fresh palate eases off to reveal a classic Nebbiolo varietal character: sour cherry, raspberry and tobacco leaf linger to give the wine brilliant length and persistence.

The wine shows beautiful fruit and floral characters in youth, but will develop well over the next 7 to 10 years and will greatly reward those who resist it’s youthful charm. Pair this wine with a medium-rare springbok fillet with a cranberry or cherry coulis.
