The 2018 Catharina is bold yet suave, forthright yet subtle, assured and alluring. It displays volumes of basil and cedar, cassis and lavender blossom, cinnamon stick and dark chocolate. Layers of concentrated red and black fruit (raspberry, blackcurrant and black cherry) show on both the nose and the palate, accented with a full, smooth texture from the Cabernet Sauvignon component. Light herbal notes from the Merlot lend a refreshing finish, while the Malbec and Petit Verdot round out the blend, adding structure and depth. Dark fruit and spice, lifting acidity and an encompassing tannic finish create the optimal pairing for most red meat (particularly a garlic and rosemary stuffed roast lamb shoulder) or rich saucy dishes. Will bottle age well for 7 to 10 years after bottling.

In The Cellar

Our flagship red wine, Steenberg Catharina, is blended from only the best barrels from each vintage. All blend components (50% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Malbec, 6% Petit Verdot) received the same vinification prior to blending. On average the grapes were harvested at a sugar level of 23-25°B. First crushed de-stemmed, 15% juice drawn off, cold soaked for 3 days, fermented on skins for 2 weeks with the temperature maxed at 28 degrees and gentle pump-overs occurred twice per day. The wines then underwent malolactic conversion in barrels after which they were racked and returned to barrels for 15 months. 83% 1st fill, 17% 2nd fill 225l French oak barrels. After this maturation period the wines were racked out of barrel, blended, then returned to barrel for a further 9 months, after which it was racked to tank and given a light fining and filtration and bottled end July 2020.

    The colour of our Stately wine is black-red with a lighter, garnet red on the rim. The nose entices with blackcurrant cassis, raspberry and pepper with a violet undertone.     Our 2018 Merlot is a quintessential cool-climate expression of the cultivar: elegant with soft red fruit and characteristic notes of vanilla, cedar and clove with a lively edge. The nose offers sour cherry, tobacco leaf and plum, while the palate reveals redcurrant, vanilla and spicy clove. The velvety texture is enhanced by refreshing acidity, while well-integrated, fine tannins add structure. This fuller-bodied wine will stand up to rich dishes with strong Mediterranean flavours, such as braised and roast meats, tomato-based stews, mature cheeses and briny olives. Will bottle age well for five to seven years after bottling.

  • STEENBERG NEBBIOLO 2017

    Returning to this wine years after bottling has proven what a great vintage 2017 was for reds in Constantia. On appearance, this wine is ruby red with a typically clear yet bright hue. The bouquet displays primary notes of fresh strawberry coulis, dried cranberry along with some truffle, leather and red cherry. The wine displays the natural tart acidity and grippy tannins of Nebbiolo on the palate, although with a well-rounded and fuller mouth-feel than can sometimes be the case with this varietal. Flavours of sour cherry, raspberry and tobacco leaf linger to give the wine brilliant length and persistence.

    The wine shows beautiful fruit and floral characters in youth, but will develop well over the next 7 to 10 years and will greatly reward those who resist it’s youthful charm.
