As the first Bordeaux-style blend composition in almost a decade; the 2017 Catharina is bold yet suave, forthright yet subtle, assured and alluring. It displays volumes of cherry and cigar, coffee and vanilla, cranberry compote and dark chocolate. Layers of concentrated red and black fruit (raspberry, blackcurrant and black cherry) show on both the nose and the palate, accented with a velvety texture from the Petit Verdot. Light herbal notes from the Merlot lend a refreshing finish, while the new varieties of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon round out the blend, adding structure and depth. Dark fruit and spice, lifting acidity and an encompassing tannic finish create the optimal pairing for most red meat or rich sauce dishes. Will bottle age well for 7 to 10 years after bottling.

In The Cellar

Our flagship red, Catharina is blended from only the best barrels from each vintage. Each cultivar is vinified and aged separately in a traditional red wine making style. On average the grapes were harvested at a sugar level of 23-25°B. The juice was fermented on the skins for 15 – 20 days, allowing the temperature in the tank to peak at 30°C. Gentle pump-overs occurred twice per day. After pressing, the wine was transferred to French oak barrels (75% new, 20% second fill and 5% third fill) for malolactic fermentation and maturation of 18 months. The constituent parts were then chosen, blended and returned for further maturation for 6 months. Thereafter the wine underwent a light fining before bottling in March 2019.

    JULY WINE CLUB PROMOTION. WAS R295. Returning to this wine years after bottling has proven what a great vintage 2017 was for reds in Constantia. On appearance, this wine is ruby red with a typically clear yet bright hue. The bouquet displays primary notes of fresh strawberry coulis, dried cranberry along with some truffle, leather and red cherry. The wine displays the natural tart acidity and grippy tannins of Nebbiolo on the palate, although with a well-rounded and fuller mouth-feel than can sometimes be the case with this varietal. Flavours of sour cherry, raspberry and tobacco leaf linger to give the wine brilliant length and persistence.

    The wine shows beautiful fruit and floral characters in youth, but will develop well over the next 7 to 10 years and will greatly reward those who resist it’s youthful charm.

    Our 2017 Merlot is an excellent expression of the cultivar: elegant with soft red fruit and characteristic notes of vanilla, cedar and clove with a lively edge. The velvety texture is enhanced by refreshing acidity, while well-integrated tannins add structure.     JULY PROMOTION: WAS R160 The colour of our Stately wine is black-red with a lighter, garnet red on the rim. The nose entices with blackcurrant cassis, raspberry and pepper with a violet undertone. The 2018 is a medium bodied wine, showing a silky texture and depth as well as an elegant tannin structure. Jasmine, fynbos, plum and ground spice notes linger on the palate long after the last sip. The Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone of this wine with a beautiful tannin structure that will aid with its longevity; whilst the Shiraz brings fleshy fruit, earthiness and spice to the blend. This wine is showing beautifully now, and will reward cellaring for up to 5 years.
